Freight Titans Join Forces to Spark a Cleaner Future

Europe’s freight industry is entering a new phase as E-Mobility Europe, TRATON Group, Iberdrola and Amazon join forces to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks and expand charging networks across the region.

The coalition, announced on October 1st, 2025, represents one of the most extensive collaborations yet aimed at cutting emissions from heavy-duty transport. It follows E-Mobility Europe’s call for faster decarbonisation in freight operations.

Electric passenger vehicles have advanced quickly, but trucking remains a challenge because of high costs, limited charging access and uneven national regulations. The new alliance intends to address these barriers by coordinating truck manufacturing, renewable energy supply, logistics operations and policy engagement under a single framework.

TRATON, parent company of MAN and Scania, is progressing toward full zero-emission capability across its truck portfolio. Iberdrola brings its experience in renewable energy generation and charging infrastructure, while Amazon offers scale through one of Europe’s largest delivery fleets.

“Amazon joins E-Mobility Europe in calling for bold EU policy action that will create the enabling framework needed to electrify and decarbonise heavy-duty trucking,” said Andreas Marschner, Amazon’s vice-president of transportation services in Europe.

The group’s initial focus will be on developing high-capacity charging corridors along major freight routes, establishing shared investment structures for infrastructure, and working with governments to improve permitting and grid capacity. Chris Heron, secretary-general of E-Mobility Europe, said: “Every part of the industry is investing heavily. What’s missing is policy alignment.”

Analysts say the partnership could shift competition in logistics and energy markets, favouring companies that can integrate vehicles, charging networks and power supply. Utilities such as Iberdrola are also expanding into the transport-energy sector, while Amazon’s involvement highlights the influence of corporate demand in driving decarbonisation.

Significant challenges remain, including limited grid capacity, slow infrastructure approvals and the high upfront cost of electric trucks. Yet the partners say closer coordination between manufacturers, utilities and fleet operators can help remove these bottlenecks.

The alliance, open to new members, aims to accelerate Europe’s path toward zero-emission transport and support the EU’s 2030 climate goals.
